Updating the <strong>weather forecast<\/strong> at sea is a token of safety and better analysis of the best route while racing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As soon as you get off a 3G\/4G coverage area, it is mandatory to use a satellite internet connection to download <strong>Grib files<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several devices are available in a large price margin going from 2 000\u20ac to 15 000\u20ac for a fast speed dedicated modem like Fleet Broadband at Inmarsat, BGAN at Trane &#038; Trane or Pilot at Iridium.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This kind of device are dedicated to professional use, most of the amateur sailors use a satellite phone as a modem. Iridium and Inmarsat fit the better to <strong>navigation<\/strong> as they are the only ones to cover entire world (except the poles for Inmarsat)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even if every provider offer prepaid cards or subscription, in both cases, it is necessary to choose between a <strong>standard SIM Card or Skyfile:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When you will choose your Sim card Iridium or Inmarsat, you will have the choice between the standard format (Iridium or Inmarsat) and the format Skyfile sold by Astrium. If you choose a Skyfile SIM card, you will then have to buy the Skyfile refills.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Skyfiles will allow you to create a dedicated email address. Thanks to its data compression system, it will also increase the downloading efficiency, so time of transfer will be reduced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As all the communications are charged according to the time spent, this system looks advantageous although the cost per minute is higher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are other optimized emails services with subscriptions which are not linked to the SIM card choice, like Teleport from Mailasail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin: 10px;\" title=\"Sim Iridium\" src=\"\" alt=\"Sim Iridium\" width=\"250\" height=\"157\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 10px; float: right;\" title=\"Sim Inmarsat\" src=\"\" alt=\"Sim Inmarsat\" width=\"251\" height=\"157\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To receive <strong>Grib files offshore<\/strong>, we can choose in between two methods\u00a0: direct dowloading or reception by email.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Direct downloading<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The direct downloading uses the internet connection at a speed of around 10Kps, so it allows downloading a 60Ko file in a few minutes in theory. \u00a0This way, you can use the usual loading interfaces like \u201cNOAA forecast\u201d in Adrena, Ugrib, Navimail, etc\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 10px auto; vertical-align: middle; display: block;\" title=\"NOAA forecast\" src=\"\" alt=\"NOAA forecast\" width=\"500\" height=\"285\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Reception by email<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Grib file<\/strong> request should be done through specialized services like Squid, Saildoc or Mailasail by sending a preset text including the geographical area and data to be included in the <strong>Grib file<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example of a request<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A :<\/em><\/strong><em> weather@mailasail.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>OBJET :<\/em><\/strong><em> grib gfs 5N:70W:35N:10W 3,6,9,12,15,18,24,36,48,60,72 GRD,PRMSL<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>&#8220;Retourne les donn\u00e9es de vitesses des vents et de pression du mod\u00e8le GFS pour une zone rectangulaire entre 5\u00b0N 70\u00b0W et 35\u00b0N et 10\u00b0W aux \u00e9ch\u00e9ances indiqu\u00e9es soit toutes les 3 heures le premier jour et \u00e0 12 heures d&#8217;intervalles pour les 2 jours suivants.&#8221;<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In response of the request, an email is sent with the <strong>Grib file<\/strong> enclosed. You just need to load it via the menu \u201c Forecast > Load grib\u201d in Adrena to read it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 10px auto; vertical-align: middle; display: block;\" title=\"Load Grib\" src=\"\" alt=\"Load Grib\" width=\"458\" height=\"266\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thanks to this method, Skyfile Mail, a free software equivalent to Outlook, is going to manage the <strong>Grib file<\/strong> request and reception.
