Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015

World’s longest sport event.

7 crews are in the starting blocks to race from next October 4th and conquer the biggest crew handed race around the world on board the Volvo 65.

The boat

Going to a monotype boat: the Volvo Ocean 65.

This new monotype was designed by Farr Yacht Design in the USA and built by four shipyards in Europe: Green Marine in UK, Decision in Switzerland, Persico in Italy and Multiplast in France.

The monotype was chosen because of economic reason (reduction of costs thanks series construction) and also to guarantee being equal arms race so that it will be battled. It is the quality of the crew – its proficiency, its technical skills – and not the boat’s ones that will make the difference.

They will be 7 crews at departure in Alicante on next October 4th coming from all horizons:

For all Legs the minimum number of Crew Members on-board while Racing shall be 6.

Maximum is 8 for a male crew and 11 for a all-female crew.

The Route

11 ports, 38 739 milles

The seven teams engaged are going to battle along almost 39 000 milles through 4 oceans.

The race is going around the world in 11 ports crossing 11 different countries on 5 continents. A departure and an arrival in Europe and stops in Africa, Asia, Oceania and America.

The 12th edition of Volvo Ocean Race will leave from Alicante in Spain  on October 4th to end nine months later on june 27th 2015 in Götenborg, Sweden.

In between, 11 stops are scheduled: Cape Town (South Africa), Auckland (New-Zealand), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Lisbonne (Portugal), Lorient (France), Itajaí (Brasil), Sanya (China), La Haye (Netherland) and Newport (USA).
